Summer Leadership Camp Programs:

Kidsbridge conducts summer programs for children who reside in urban neighborhoods in our service region. The program combines individual creative and team-building activities, which empowers children to see themselves as capable and achievement-oriented. The programs are conducted in partnership with the Trenton CYO and the Trenton YWCA. Generous support for these programs is provided by PSE&G, the City of Trenton and the NJ Commission for Holocaust Education.

Anti-Bullying / Character Education Programs:

  • Instead of the usual fighting, yelling, and pushing, students practice nonviolent ways to handle conflict, such as using "I" messages, standing up for others, taking deep breaths, or simply walking away.
  • A boy writes a letter to a student he bullied, apologizing for his bad behavior.
  • Youngsters who had never before "hung out" together work cooperatively and solve problems. In the process, they discover their power to effect positive change.

These are some of the tangible outcomes of Kidsbridge's Conflict Resolution / Anti-Bullying Pilot Program, which took place this spring at the Robeson Elementary School in Trenton. Central to the program's success was facilitator Naomi Drew, who garnered rave reviews from teachers and students, alike.

Drew's engaging, hands-on approach kept the attention of the twelve fourth- and fifth-graders who were selected to participate in the program. The group consisted of kids who had bullied others and kids who were picked on. The group was named "The Action Team." The group’s defined purpose was to help create harmony in their school, starting with themselves. Lessons in conflict resolution, anger management, and personal responsibility were blended with sculpting activities that helped kids release stress and exercise creative thinking.

Working in the group enabled kids to practice the skills they were learning: cooperation, negotiation, empathy, and managing anger. It also enabled them to explore new opportunities for themselves—that of gaining attention for positive actions and creative thought.

Kidsbridge would like to express its thanks to the generous donors that make these programs possible: PNC Bank and Janssen Pharmaceutica.
